HYGIENE & CLEANING 

 

Duration: 5 days

Repeated 15 to 20 times per year.

Requirements: 

  • literate in 2 of the 3 official languages of the Western Cape

The contents of the course are as follows:

Module 1: Basic calculations – arithmetic, length, mass, volume and percentage

Module 2: Personal health and hygiene and handling HIV / Aids in the workplace

Module 3: Accommodation services, cleaning kitchens, bathrooms and living areas together with basic laundry skills

Module 4: Life skills – compiling a CV, finding and keeping a job

 

Learners who complete this course are able to find jobs in the tourism support business e.g. guesthouses, bed and breakfast places and also in private homes.

FOOD PREPARATION

 

Duration: 12 days

Repeated 4 times per year.

Requirements: 

  • Minimum: passed grade 9.

  • Successfully completed hygiene and cleaning course

  • Must pass a selection process / test before being accepted as learner.

The course contents for a group of 12 learners maximum are as follows:

  • Safe Food Handling Practices

  • Baking: breads, cakes and desserts

  • Preparation of vegetables for hot and cold dishes

  • Breakfast and sandwich preparation

  • Setting of a breakfast take/ Etiquette

 

Learners who complete this course find work where mainly fresh food is prepared i.e. as kitchen assistants in the hospitality industry, as general workers in a fresh food procurement environment or with private households.

HOME BASED CARE

 

Duration: 18 Weeks

Repeated 4 times per year.

Requirements: 

  • Minimum: passed grade 9

  • Successfully completed hygiene and cleaning course 

  • Must pass a selection process / test before being accepted as learner.   

 

The contents of the course are as follows:

  • The caregiver and the patient

  • Care of the aged

  • Vital signs / Wound care

  • Anatomy and physiology

  • Medicine / Disabilities

  • Patients needs / Special care

  • Nutrition and cooking

  • Social services

  • Foot care / Oral hygiene

  • Family planning

  • TB/ HIV/ AIDS other non-communicable diseases

  • Basic and advanced First Aid / Practicals

Learners find work in Primary Community Health Service, Homes for the Aged, Frail Care Centres, Private homes.
